CASCADE HEAD MUSIC FESTIVAL PRESENTS

THREE OREGON JAZZ ENSEMBLES MAY 30 – JUNE 1, 2008

The Cascade Head Music Festival presents a weekend of live jazz performance from Oregon’s finest jazz ensembles May 30 – June 1, at the Lincoln City Cultural Center on the Central Oregon Coast. Featured groups are the Midnight Serenaders May 30, Whirled News May 31, The Steve Cannon Blow Hard Big Band June 1. The Pinot Noir Jazztet opens for Midnight Serenaders on May 30. The Festival Weekend includes a free public family-oriented Encounter with the visiting jazz musicians that includes demonstrations and conversation about the Weekend’s music.

“The Festival is featuring three ensembles that showcase the breadth and variety of excellent jazz in Oregon from early Twentieth Century through the latest West Coast/World”, says Music Director, Keller Coker. “It’s great to have jazz back in the Festival program for the first time in over fifteen years.”

On Friday May 30, The Midnight Serenaders perform an infectious blend of old-time jazz and early swing, offering up a sweet collection of songs and tunes from the early 20th century. This Portland, Oregon-based sextet energizes audiences, and transports them on a melodic, swing-crazy journey to the dance-happy era known as “the Jazz Age”. The Pinot Noir Jazztet opens the concert with standards and originals in the tradition of Ella Fitagerald, Miles Davis, Dave Brubeck, and Nancy Wilson.

Saturday May 31, Whirled News plays a groove-oriented blend of original compositions influenced by rhythmic traditions from around the globe. The group is led by saxophonist Tom Bergeron and trombonist Keller Coker, who do much of the writing for the band.

On Sunday June 1, The Steve Cannon Blow Hard Big Band assembled by Trumpet playing Band leader and recording artist Steve Cannon takes you on an emotional journey through the many personalities of the modern day Big Band. Beautiful ballads, invigorating sambas, contemporary favorites, and screaming straight ahead jazz.

All weekend jazz weekend concerts are at 7 p.m. and the free, public Encounter sessions on June 1 is at 4 p.m. All the concerts will be held in the Lincoln City Cultural Center, The Historic DeLake School, 540 NE Hwy 101, Lincoln City, OR.
