BEHRENS FOUNDATION GRANT ENABLES CASCADE HEAD MUSIC FESTIVAL’S FREE FAMILY-FRIENDLY MUSIC ENCOUNTERS

The Cascade Head Music Festival invites students, families, and the general public to a free public Encounter with visiting Festival musicians, 4 PM, Saturday, June 14 at the Lincoln City Cultural Center, Historic DeLake School, 540 NE Hwy 101, in Lincoln City.

“Each year the Cascade Head Music Festival Encounters have drawn a larger audience of young people as well as adults,” says President Peggy Hawker. “Everyone looks forward to a chance to hear more about the music from the musicians in the casual Encounter environment. Our visiting musicians are eager to let the audience sample the music and to demonstrate the most interesting aspects of composition and performance. The Walter R. Behren’s Foundation grant helps make our free family-friendly Encounters possible.”

The 4 PM June 14 Encounter is the second of the 2008 season. Those who attended the Jazz Encounter asked the musicians about the improvisation process in jazz and about the instruments featured during the weekend. Members of Pinot Jazztet and Whirled News demonstrated several alternative improvisations on the song ‘I’ve got the World on a String’ and showed the audience how jazz ensemble members communicate as they improvise together within a jazz music structure. Q&A topics ranged from the place of improvisation in 18th century Western Euopean art music to what inspired the several composers among the visiting musicians to create new tunes. Audience members were very interested in the education and career choices of the musicians, and students, Sherry Alves and Adam Bates of the Pinot Noir Jazztet answered questions about their music education at Western Oregon University.

This year’s classical weekend Encounter will feature performers from all three visiting chamber Ensembles, DeRosa Ensemble (June 12), The Florestan Trio (June 13), and Tone Poem (June 15). Concert programs include music by Beethoven, Brahms, Dvorak, Mendelssohn, Schubert as well as Tangos arranged by Gavin Duffy of Portland and rags by William Bolcomb. The Encounter offers a great way to get a closer listen and better understanding of concert offerings, and families are encouraged to bring their curiosity and their questions about the weekend’s music, musical instruments, and performers. Light refreshments will be available.

June 12 and 13, concerts are at 7 p.m. and the Sunday June 15 concert is at 3 p.m. All the concerts will be held in the Lincoln City Cultural Center, The Historic DeLake School, 540 NE Hwy 101, Lincoln City, OR.
